The 58th Mito Bush Clover Festival

Four Seasons in Mito

The bush clover(Hagi) in Kairakuen was a gift from the Sendai Domain to Tokugawa Nariaki. Nariaki was the 9th lord of the Mito Domain and the father of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th shogun. These plants were originally planted in the garden when Kairakuen was established. Today, approximately 750 bush clovers bloom in the garden, with Miyagino bush clover being the most common type. You’ll also see other varieties, including white hagi, yamahagi, and marubahagi.
