Tokiwa Shrine

Highlight

Tokiwa Shrine is a shrine dedicated to the 2nd and 9th lords of the Mito Domain, Tokugawa Mitsukuni and Tokugawa Nariaki. Many buildings were burned down during the war in 1945 but they were rebuilt in their current form in 1958. On the shrine grounds, the Noh theater (Kagura hall and Shinsen hall), which survived the war, remains, along with the Giretsukan, which exhibits materials related to Mito learning and a war drum said to be the largest in Japan.
