Kobuntei

Highlight

Within the premises of Kairakuen Park stands the refined and elegant “Kobuntei,” embodying the dignified essence of the samurai.

Tokugawa Nariaki, the founder of Kairakuen, invited his samurai and subjects here, hosting events such as gatherings for celebrating longevity and poetry meetings.

The name “Kobuntei” is derived from the alternate name for the plum tree, “Kobunki.” It is said that Tokugawa Nariaki personally decided everything, from the location of its construction within the park to its interior design.

The original building was destroyed in an air raid in 1945, and the current Kōbuntei was reconstructed over a period of three years, beginning in 1955.
