Ibaraki Prefectural Archives and History Museum

Highlight

The Ibaraki Prefectural Archives and History Museum is a museum featuring exhibits related to the history of Ibaraki Prefecture, located just a 10-minute walk from Kairakuen. The vast gardens surrounding the facility house relocated and displayed buildings, including the former Mizukaido Elementary School, which was constructed in 1881. Additionally, in the fall, the ginkgo trees turn golden, and the area is also known as a famous spot for autumn foliage.

※ University students are classified as “general.”
The following individuals can enter for free:
○ Elementary, junior high, and high school students, as well as preschool children
○ Individuals with a disability certificate and one accompanying person.

Public Holidays

The regular closing days are Monday (or the following day if it’s a public holiday) and the New Year’s holiday period (from December 29 to January 1).

However, there may be special openings during Golden Week and the Plum Festival period. The museum may also be closed for internal maintenance from late June to early July.

Access
By public transportation

From the north exit of JR Mito Station, take bus number 10 from Bus Terminal 4 bound for the History Museum/Kairakuen, and get off at “Midori-cho Rekishikan-mae” in about 10 minutes.

Alternatively, you can take the bus bound for the Sakura-gawa Nishi Danchi, and get off at “Rekishikan Kairakuen Entrance,” which is a 2-minute walk.
